About the Client:

Our client is a tech-enabled finance advisory firm serving founders, investors, and high-growth businesses across the Australian mid-market. They partner with leading VC and PE firms and their portfolio companies covering everything from CFO advisory and financial operations to tax structuring and compliance, and are also the founders of Runbook AI, an AI-native finance managed services platform.


Tax is a core and growing part of their offer. They're now looking for a commercially sharp Managing Director – Tax to lead the practice.


About the Role:

This is a practice leadership opportunity, not a seat inside a large firm. You'll inherit an active client portfolio and a clear mandate to grow the tax practice within an established, well-connected mid-market advisory firm. You'll work directly with founders, CFOs, and investors, and over time, build a team and shape the service offering from the front.


What You'll Be Doing:

  • Leading tax compliance across corporate and group structures, including income tax returns, BAS, FBT, and consolidated groups
  • Delivering tax advisory and structuring work, entity restructuring, reorganisations, ESOP/equity schemes (including ESIC registration), and transaction support
  • Managing personal tax structuring for founders, executives, and high-net-worth individuals
  • Providing tax due diligence support on M&A transactions and capital raises
  • Developing client tax positions, letters of advice, and board-level reporting
  • Contributing to the internal capability build knowledge base, templates, and service productisation
  • Owning practice growth proposals, referral relationships, and developing the service offering over time
  • Collaborating with the CFO advisory and finance operations teams on integrated client engagements


What You'll Need to Be Successful:

  • Registered Tax Agent - this is a firm requirement
  • Strong technical capability across corporate tax compliance, including group and consolidated structures
  • Demonstrated experience with personal tax structuring for founders, executives, and HNW individuals
  • Proven track record in tax advisory and structuring entity restructures, reorganisations, and transaction support
  • A commercial, client-first mindset, comfortable working directly with decision-makers, not through layers
  • Exposure to the startup, VC, or PE ecosystem or a genuine interest in operating in it
  • CA or CPA qualified (preferred)


Bonus points for experience with ESOPs and equity schemes, cross-border tax (AU/NZ/US), or a background at a Big 4, mid-tier firm, or in-house at a PE/VC-backed business.
